Formalin-free surgical specimen management is transforming the workflow at the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board

Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board in south Wales has published an article in Pathology in practice about their experiences in transforming their surgical specimen workflow with the adoption of TissueSAFE and SealSAFE technology. Their main driver for changes was concerns of health effects of formalin exposure of trust staff.

Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board has two histopathology laboratories, the main located at Royal Glamorgan Hospital and the smaller at Prince Charles hospital. Both sites have operating theatres sending surgical specimens to the laboratories. In the article they will tell about their transformative process in adopting new innovative technology, the drivers for implementing change, the benefits of the new solution for the different departments and the impact on their workflow.

The TissueSAFE and SealSAFE systems are vacuum sealing solutions which minimises exposure of formalin and improves safety for patients, theatre personnel, porters and delivery drivers. You can track time and temperature during transfer, deliver fresh tissue to the laboratory to allow molecular testing and bio-banking. The solution allows for controlled and standardised fixation allowing greater quality for downstream processing as well as a full chain of custody and audit trail from operating theatres to laboratory.
